Categories

There are 13 categories at the AJ100 awards 2018. Some of the category winners will be decided from results directly derived from the survey; others will be categories that practices specifically choose to enter and may require a presentation to the AJ100 judging panel.

More details on the criteria for each category along with how the shortlist and winners will be decided is below. 

NEW MEMBER OF THE YEAR AWARD sponsored by Equitone
The New Member of the Year title is awarded to the practice which entered the AJ100 for the first time in five years and is judged based on its business success and the quality of its work.

Shortlist is decided through data drawn from the survey and the winner is selected by the AJ Editorial Team

FASTEST GROWING PRACTICE AWARD sponsored by Spectral Lighting
The Fastest Growing Practice Award is given to the practice that increased its fee earnings and its number of qualified architect employees by the highest percentage in 2017.

Shortlist is decided through data drawn from the survey and the winner is selected by the AJ Editorial Team

INTERNATIONAL PRACTICE OF THE YEAR AWARD
The International Practice of the Year award is based on key international business data from the AJ100 survey, such as the practice's percentage growth in fees and the increase year-on-year in the number of architects employed in overseas markets.

Shortlist is decided through data drawn from the survey. This award category will be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges and the winner announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.
 

EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR AWARD sponsored by Bespoke Careers
This award recognises the best practice for employees, judged on HR issues including staff satisfaction, workplace culture, benefits and staff turnover. Practices need to submit an entry (within the AJ100 survey) to show what initiatives have been put in place to help motivate, train, and support its staff.

Entry is through the employer satisfaction survey and site visits. The shortlist will then be decided from the survey and visits from April 23rd - May 6th. The winner chosen by a panel of judges and the winner announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.

PRACTICE OF THE YEAR sponsored by Schlüter-Systems

Practice of the Year is based on business and quality of design output. Looking at the key business data from the main AJ100 survey and employee survey. A shortlist will be obtained from the data within the survey and the employer satisfaction survey. Those shortlisted practices will then be required to present to a judging panel who will decide the winner.

Entry is through specific questions in the survey and the employer satisfaction survey. This award category will be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges and the winner announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.

SUSTAINABLE PRACTICE OF THE YEAR sponsored by Roca
To be considered for the Sustainability Award for sustainability firms will need to submit a project which demonstrates the practice’s approach to sustainability, and complete a 300-word summary highlighting the practice’s specific achievements in this area.

A shortlist will be obtained from the data within the survey and a 300-word summary. This award category will be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges and the winner announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.

BUILDING OF THE YEAR AWARD sponsored by Graphisoft
The Building of the Year category will be decided by a panel of judges and announced at the AJ100 Awards dinner. 

Entry is through specific questions in the survey with site visits taking place between Monday 23rd - Friday 6 May. The winner will then be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges on Friday 19th May and announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.

CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROFESSION
Practices are asked to nominate an individual who has contributed something of outstanding importance to the industry.

Nominations are made through specific questions in the survey and decided by AJ Editorial. There is no shortlist for this award and the winner will be announced on the night.

CLIENT OF THE YEAR
This can be awarded to any client who has worked with one of the top AJ100 practices. Each practice will need to provide reasons why its chosen client should win.

CLIENTS CHOICE AWARD - Sponsored by Miele
The Clients Choice Award is awarded to a member of the AJ100 who clients deem to be the best to work with, in terms of design output, relationship management and fee level. 

A survey is sent to key clients with a series of questions, the answers determine the winner.

ARCHITECTURAL COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR AWARD
This is awarded to the most successful collaboration on a project or initiative over the past 12 months. The collaborator can be another architect or a firm in another sector such as engineering, quantity surveying, contracting, project management and development or a client or stakeholder. Each practice will need to explain how the partnership came about and what made it an outstanding success. For example, how the collaboration made cost savings, improved sustainability or added value on a project, which resulted in happier customers. Please provide contact details for the collaborator.

Entry is through a specific question in the survey. This winner will be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges and announced at the AJ100 awards dinner

EXECUTIVE ARCHITECT OF THE YEAR 
This is awarded to the practice which has delivered a significant building or buildings over the past year to the highest possible standards. The practice will have demonstrated how it retained the concept and principles set out by the lead architect, delivered the project on time and on budget, collaborated with the contractors and other key players in the construction process and, where possible, improved the design.

Entry is through specific questions in the survey. The winner will be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges on and announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.
 
BEST USE OF TECHNOLOGY sponsored by Canon
The practice that wins this award will have used technology to transform the way it does business. For example, the practice may have invested in technology such as 3-D printing, nano/bio-technology or new materials to improve the quality of its architecture. It may have invested in computer software to drive efficiencies in its business.

Entry is through specific questions in the survey. The winner will be decided by a presentation to a panel of judges and announced at the AJ100 awards dinner.
