Barra Mac Ruairi
University of Bristol , Chief Property Officer, Campus Division
Barra is the Chief Property Officer at the University of Bristol. He leads the Campus Division and is a member of the University’s Management Team. He is a Chartered Architect and Chartered Planner. Barra spent a decade in Local Government, within the austerity years, firstly as the Strategic Director of Place at Bradford and then Bristol. Prior to that he was Head of the Urban Renaissance at the Yorkshire RDA, having worked in the development and consultancy sectors in various cities and countries across numerous projects: housing, retail & leisure, education, commercial & industrial.
His career to date has been about the making, managing, maintaining and minding of places at all scales from a singular room to a polycentric region. His expertise is in Urban Development underpinned by an exemplary track record of delivery in challenging circumstances.
His academic interest rests in Urbanism and he has been a visiting Professor at the School of Architecture University of Sheffield, a partner at the Bauhaus, European School of Urbanism and is a Fellow of the RSA.
In his current role he oversees the sustainable operation and development of an academic and administrative estate of 350+ buildings, 4000+ residences and two farms across three campuses. He leads the capital delivery of the £500m Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.
